After a long gap, I was able to watch couple of movies last week. One of them was, 'Kadaisi Vivasayi' (The last farmer). The movie is superbly taken and a must watch. The main character is an eighty-five year old farmer who lives alone with his two cows and chickens, with no electricity. His sisters live nearby and in their own ways, they take care of their octogenarian brother. It was great to see the love among the siblings in their old age.
While watching this, I remembered my trip to Madurai in March. Visited my friend's dad who had a bad fall and is unable to walk properly. As I walked to their house, I saw an old lady who was cleaning and cutting vegetables in the courtyard.
When enquired, my friend said she is the elder sister of his dad. When she heard that his brother had a bad fall and is bed ridden, this 82-year old lady took the public transport (bus tickets are free for women in Tamil Nadu) and walked alone to be with her brother house. She wouldn't miss a day (returns to her home everyday) during initial weeks after her brother returned home from the hospital stay.
She will massage his brother's leg in the morning, and help with household chores. I must have gone nine months after the fall, and she still kept visiting.
I was humbled by this octogenarian's (who lost her husband at an early age and lives with her son) love for her brother. Life is beautiful, indeed, despite all the hate, strife, and jealously.
